British Land has successfully recruited three apprentices to join Meadowhall Shopping Centre as part of Retail Path – the retail property industry’s apprenticeship scheme operated by the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC) Educational Trust and National Skills Academy for Retail.
The new apprentices, Reece Gafaar, Jordan Anderson and Jessica Goodwin, will join Meadowhall Shopping Centre’s management team and retailers for the 12-month programme to achieve a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Retail.
The year-long programme – delivered onsite by The Source Skills Academy, a member of the National Skills Academy Network – will provide the apprentices with a 360-degree perspective of life within a shopping centre. It will aim to give them practical experience in the different specialisms required to efficiently operate a shopping centre, from centre and facilities management to sales.
Retail Path was set up by the BCSC Educational Trust and National Skills Academy in 2014 to address the issue of youth unemployment and to encourage more young people to consider a career in the retail property industry.
Deborah Green, Asset Manager of Meadowhall Shopping Centre, British Land said: “Retail Path is bringing the retail property industry together to showcase the diversity and rewarding careers we can offer to our younger generation. This not only safeguards their future, but our future too. Meadowhall Shopping Centre is our first to roll-out Retail Path and I anticipate their success will prove how we can work to challenge youth unemployment while developing our own talent pipeline.”
Darren Pearce, Centre Director of Meadowhall Shopping Centre: “As the first British Land scheme to kick start Retail Path, we are honoured to be able to provide a professional entry point into the retail property industry for Reese, Jordan and Jessica. I am sure our new apprentices will take away a broad range of skills and new qualities from this experience and support them in securing employment in the future.”
Peter Drummond, Chairman of the BCSC Educational Trust, commented: “This is a very exciting time for Retail Path as we see it grow from strength to strength from its humble beginnings back in September 2014. Retail Path is giving young people a professional point of entry into the retail property industry and it is great to see those who would not typically have access to our industry, or an understanding of the diversity of careers involved, joining British Land and Meadowhall Shopping Centre.”
Ann Cadman, Managing Director of The Source Skills Academy, says "We are delighted to be involved in this innovative project and, as a member of NSA Network, we are working with Meadowhall to promote this great opportunity and have the privilege of delivering the training.’
