COURSE: Leadership & Management Apprenticeship

What apprenticeship are you doing?

I am currently studying a Level 5 Institute of Leadership and Management qualification which I am hoping will further my career into Assistant Management. Previously, I completed a Level 3 Diploma in Business and Administration and Level 2 Information Technology in August 2017 which was a 12 month course through The Source.

What do you do on a day to day basis in your job role?

During my apprenticeship I started off working on reception to gain customer service skills and after a few months I began to get involved in bigger projects within the administration team to help with the modules on my apprenticeship course. A couple of the modules that I chose were to create an audit and deliver and present a presentation. I linked this together by choosing a project to change in the practice and presented these changes to the rest of the practice team and I was observed by my tutor during this to pass these modules. General day to day tasks during my apprenticeship included dealing with the post, putting medical records in order and summarising new records inputting diagnoses from the paper record to the computer system. I went on to register patients, deduct patients who moved to different surgeries, and many other tasks as they arose.

What is the best thing about your apprenticeship?

The best thing about an apprenticeship is learning on the job, gaining hands on experience, starting with the basics and working up and gaining confidence as you learn. Also having the support of a tutor who regularly checks in on your progress by visiting the workplace to keep you on track to succeed.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship rather than other qualifications?

I chose to do an apprenticeship as I wanted to earn as I learn, and benefit from being in a work environment and enjoy being part of a team.

Why did you decide to work at Charnock Health Centre?

I previously did a placement whilst studying at college at Charnock Health Centre which I thoroughly enjoyed. This gave me an insight into the workings on a GP practice and motivated me to seek an apprenticeship there. All the staff especially the Practice Manager have supported and helped me through the apprenticeship to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible.

What is your best achievement to date?

My best achievement to date is being put forward and accepted for the ILM Level 5 Management course after only working at the Practice for 2 years.

What advice would you give to other people looking for an apprenticeship?

My advice would be firstly to think about the type of career you would like to have and contact The Source who will help and support you with your chosen career or will offer advice and suggestions if you are unsure.
