What apprenticeship do you do?

My name is Jack and I am a database apprentice working at AESSEAL®. 

What is the best thing about your apprenticeship?

I was very fortunate to find this apprenticeship because I didn’t have any prior experience in ICT software, but AESSEAL® wanted to take someone with very basic level experience and work with them to build on skills, so I was very lucky. It’s given me a stepping stone into a career in an area I’ve been in interested in for a while. I’ve always been interested in doing an ICT related apprenticeship but I didn’t do an ICT GCSE because the courses offered to me at school were software related and I wanted to work more on building computers. Building computers and using hardware is my passion. My original idea for my apprenticeship was to be working in a first line customer support role, but it wasn’t what I wanted to do. This apprenticeship is great and doesn’t keep me away from computers.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship with AESSEAL®?

The last place I worked was in the same company as my parents. It was a small company that got bought out by a much larger company and I felt like it had lost its character. What I liked about AESSEAL® is that despite it being a global company, it feels really familiar. Everyone is really easy to get along with and you get a sense of community here. My interview was quite informal which boosted my confidence. I knew then that it’s a really friendly and good place to be working.

It has potentially opened a lot of doors for me because I have gotten a lot of experience and I feel like I have an edge in the workplace. 

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

In the past month, I’ve been preparing for incorporating a new system. I’ve set up my own practice databases so that I can practice using SQL - Structured Query Language for databases – and have been using this to assist my colleagues with their work on the live databases.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been working on my customer service module and I’ve been working closely with the I.T. support team so that I can get experience working with customers. With the support team I have been setting up a laptop and diagnosing customer issues all while learning how the support department runs.
