April Bell, from Hillsborough, first started working for Monica F Hewitt Florists over six years ago on a work experience placement when she was just 14. Since then she has worked hard to gain qualifications in Floristry, Retail and Retail Skills Management and is currently working towards a qualification in Business and Admin with The Source Skills Academy. April didn’t enjoy school and didn’t have high expectations for herself, but has discovered abilities she didn’t know she was capable of by learning in the workplace.
Starting as an Apprentice Florist Assistant, April has thrived in the floristry environment and her keen eye for detail meant she was soon producing work to a professional standard. With thanks to her positive attitude and hard work she has worked her way up to take on a multitude of roles including trainee manager, wedding coordinator, corporate coordinator, training supervisor and demonstrator. April is involved in the everyday running of the business including managing staff, dealing with paperwork, operating end of day total sales and accounts as well as managing emails and social media. She also trains new apprentices and is responsible for providing floral demonstrations at classes and events.
April has been working on promoting the shop’s products to a younger target market. Trading for over 40 years, the business has built up a foundation of regular customers but April recognises that it’s important to also target the younger market and her work on social media is helping with this.
April also puts in a lot of personal time into attending wedding fairs and researching growing floral trends. Now 21, April has grown with the business and it’s clear to see that this is not just a job for April, it is her life.
April said: “I really can’t believe how far I’ve come and how many qualifications I have now achieved. I had a really tough time at school, I didn’t enjoy classroom learning and I left early due to personal difficulties. I think apprenticeships are a great way of learning whilst on the job and they’ve enabled me to use my passion and find a job I really enjoy”.
Managing Director at Monica F Hewitt, Helen Bollands, said: “April is more than just a valued member of staff to our business; she is part of the business itself and has brought not just financial benefit but that special extra something that cannot be measured.”
