Remote Education at The Source Academy

Remote Education at The Source Academy

At The Source Academy (trading name of Meadowhall Training Ltd), we pride ourselves on offering accessible and inclusive learning & training opportunities which are designed to meet the individual needs of learners, employers and local communities.

As a provider, we have adapted responsively to the changing needs of our learners. We offer safe, inclusive learning environments which are fully Covid-safe, but we also recognise that for many learners attendance on-site may not be an option.

Our Remote Education Offer

To meet the needs of learners unable to access our excellent on site-learning opportunities, we also offer the following accessible learning opportunities which can be undertaken from your own home, workplace or suitable location of your choice:

Apprenticeships

Our apprenticeship offer is based fully in the employer workplace. Apprentices engage, learn and are assessed using our industry-leading online learning platforms.

Our remote offer is enabled via online learning platforms which we can support learners to learn how to access. We support all learning using video call software to enable all to receive face-to-face support from their industry-expert specialist.

Learners can typically expect our industry-expert specialists to regularly engage in both onsite and remote visits to monitor progress and provide appropriate support. In the event of a situation where we are unable (e.g. due to national or regional restrictions) to provide on-site visits, learners will receive regular remote visits to ensure they continue to receive support.

All employers of Apprenticeships are provided with their own access details to our industry-leading online learning platform. Using this they are able to engage with our staff and monitor the progress of their apprentices with set learning activity.

During periods of extended remote working, our staff will also undertake additional reviews with learners in the form of welfare checks. These are undertaken to both review progress of learning but also to ensure our learners remain supported in every manner to ensure they continue to enjoy and engage in their apprenticeship journey.

Traineeships

As a pre-employment and pre-apprenticeship training programme, our Trainees are supported throughout their learning journey and work placements by industry-leading online platforms.

Our remote offer is enabled via online learning platforms which we can support learners to learn how to access. We support all learning using video call software to enable all learners engaging in learning remotely to receive face-to-face support from their tutor.

Due to the strong focus upon personal skills development, trainees are typically required to ensure they attend a minimum of 90% of on-site training.

In the event that a learner is unable to access on-site training, the organisation will take all efforts to make reasonable adjustments to ensure any affected learner can be supported remotely by their tutor with learning, assessment and monitoring on their progress.

Visits to support learners during their work placements will occur on a regular basis. In the event that work placements cannot continue to be undertaken (e.g. due to national or regional restrictions), we will support learners to develop skills via or online learning platform and liaise remotely with employers to capture feedback as to the progress made by learners during any partial placements undertaken.

During periods of extended remote working, our staff will also undertake additional reviews with learners in the form of welfare checks. These are undertaken to both review progress of learning but also to ensure our learners remain supported in every manner to ensure they continue to enjoy and engage in their traineeship journey.

Adult & Community Learning

As a strong advocate of delivering accessible and inclusive learning, in addition to our excellent adult training provision on-site we offer a range of opportunities for remote education. For more information visit our Online Training page.

We recognise that online learning may, for many reasons, not be a suitable option for some learners. Wherever possible we will also commit to provide support with hard copies of learning materials and use phone-based support to ensure learners engaging in this manner can progress and achieve their personal goals.

Employer & Commercial Training

Following employer feedback, we offer a wide, sector-leading array of online training options for employers, supporting their employees to receive ongoing professional and personal development both within the work and office environment.

We offer a broad range of online commercial training. For more information visit our Online Training page.

How we Provide Remote Education

To be as accessible and inclusive as possible, we aim to ensure our remote education offer is fully available online.

Our online courses can be accessed using any suitable device with an active internet connection. For the best possible experience, we recommend the use of Google Chrome or similar.

To receive face-to-face support from our staff, learners will require access to a device with a camera and microphone. We currently use Microsoft Teams as our preferred method of online support.

We recognise that for some learning online may not be suitable. Wherever possible in these situations we will take all appropriate reasonable adjustments to our remote education offer to provide a similar learning experience using physical learning materials and phone-based support. Please note some for some qualifications this may not be possible due to awarding body requirements.

How we Assess Remote Education

Our remote learning is assessed using industry-standard and awarding body determined assessment methods.

For most remote learning this takes the form of portfolio-based assessment or, for some online learning, remotely assessed online learning. The learner’s supporting staff member will make them aware of the method of assessments for your learning and support you to prepare.

Some remote education may require on-site assessment on-site, due to practical elements requiring observation. The method and potential location of this assessment differs due to different awarding body requirements; please ask us for more information if a specific requirement/need in relation exists.

Learner Requirements

As an organisation committed to high standards of training, learning and assessment, we have the same high expectations of our learners.

In order to ensure every learner succeeds in their personal goals, we ask that every learner:

  • Has appropriate internet access to where remote education is online / or access to physical materials where this is identified as a suitable alternative
  • Can commit to regular learning and reviews of learning with their tutor
  • Engages actively in learning
  • Makes the organisation aware, at enrolment, of any specific support requirements they may have and commits to receive and engage in any support subsequently agreed & provided
  • Where attending online learning ‘sessions’, attends every session wherever possible, and no less than 90% of all sessions
  • Notifies their tutor if struggling to access online learning or are unable to engage in a timetabled learning/review session

We also ask, where employers are supporting or enabling learning that every employer:

  • Supports and encourages their learner to engage in their training/development opportunities
  • Provides appropriate access and time to enable their engagement

Remote Education with Specialist Requirements

Wherever possible we will enable learners to access our whole learning offer remotely.

In some cases, specialist requirements may require some on-site learning/assessment. Examples include:

  • Training with a practical/physical assessment requirement
  • Training/learning with a work-based or ‘at work’ assessed component

Wherever possible we will aim to enable remote assessment of such skills e.g. through video recording of practical / on work premise activity, where a learner is unable to physically participate assessment. This will be dependant upon approval of awarding bodies – please contact us for more information if where specific requirements/needs are known to see how we can support.

Barriers to Remote Education

As an inclusive provider of education and training, we will commit to taking all reasonable steps to overcome potential barriers to remote education. To enable as inclusive opportunity as possible, the organisation commits to:

  • Provide alternatives to online remote education wherever possible, such as physical copies of online learning content
  • Enable access to dedicated Covid-Safe facilitated IT resources on-site at the venue
  • Make all reasonable adjustments possible to both the method by which remote education is provided and the format of remote education to ensure its accessibility for all
  • Provide a ‘Quiet Room’ on-site where learners wish to engage in remote education in a distraction-free / low sensory input environment

Where an individual, employer or community is aware of specific needs or requirements, please contact us to discuss how we may be able to adapt our remote education offer in response.
